German Historical Institute Washington, D.C.: Fellowship in the History of Knowledge

The Fellow will have the opportunity to make use of the resources in the Washington metropolitan area, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives, while pursuing his or her own research. Travel within the US to work in archives and libraries will also be possible. Candidates doing original research for a dissertation or a second book project will be given preference.

Art der Förderung

The fellowship is open to both doctoral and postdoctoral scholars based in North America and Europe. The monthly stipend is € 2,000 for doctoral students and € 3,400 for postdoctoral scholars. In addition, fellowship recipients based in Europe will receive reimbursement for their round-trip airfare to the U.S.

To apply please send a cover letter, a CV, a copy of your most recent diploma or transcripts, at least one letter of reference (sent separately), a research project proposal (5-pages or 2,000 words max), and a research schedule for the fellowship period, no later than December 1, 2017. Applicants may write in either English or German; we recommend that they use the language in which they are most proficient. Please also clearly state in the application why your project is a good fit for this specific fellowship. Voraussetzungen

The fellowship is open to both doctoral and postdoctoral scholars.

Potential projects could focus on (but are not limited to) the following areas: the dynamics of knowledge transfer, communication and dissemination (or restriction) of knowledge, the preservation, collection, and curation of knowledge, and the transformative nature of knowledge and its impact on societies. It is essential that the proposed research projects make use of historical methods and engage with the relevant historiography.
